Live at The Break Room 1999.
Live is a live album by American emo band Sunny Day Real Estate. A set list from the How it Feels to Be Something On tour, it was released in 1999 on Sub Pop. Sunny Day Real Estate was apparently displeased with the outcome of the record. However, their label Sub Pop apparently did not run the record by the band before releasing it to the public. This record is allegedly the reason why Sunny Day Real Estate left Sub Pop for another label.
The core of Sunny Day Real Estate formed in 1992, originally under the name Empty Set. Empty Set consisted of Dan Hoerner (guitar, vocals), Nate Mendel (bass), and William Goldsmith (drums). They released a 7-inch, Flatland Spider, before a tumultuous period of musical chairs and name changes. In that timeframe, Mendel took a break to tour with another band, Hoerner took over the bass, and the group was joined by Jeremy Enigk, a high school friend of Goldsmith. Before long, Enigk ascended as the permanent frontman of the band. Where Hoerner’s vocal style had been in the rougher, ******** vein, Enigk’s higher-pitched, somewhat strained vocal style added greater emotional depth to the band’s songs. When Mendel returned, the complete band settled on the name Sunny Day Real Estate. They released another 7-inch, Thief, Steal Me a Peach in 1993.

Thank you, he looks so different. I love the background vocal combination of Dan, with the drummer of Dashboard.

That’s Dan. He’s the one who does backing vocals, not lead (that’s Jeremy).

Is the guitar player in this video the same SDRE member who plays in Dashboard Confessional?

Nice Vid. I enjoyed it. We market properties and other things on youtube, we hope to create a large network of people interested in making money. Your video gets a five star rating from us. I hope you feel the same about ours.

Actually they weren’t post-emo, they’re debut album “Diary” is often said to be the first emo album released on an Indie label.
Don’t always believe what you read on the internet, which is probably a bit of hypocrisy, so sorry.
Maybe better advice would be that you figure out for yourself what this genre of music is.

Rites Of Spring is the first band I’ve ever heard classified as being “emo”. I’ve heard Sunny Day called “emo”. I don’t know anything about what’s currently considered emo.

DANNY

They are post-emo / indie rock - I saw this on a site talking about them.

SDRE has actually been credited in some circles as the inventors of the emo genre. However, I wholeheartedly agree with your final sentiment. Who cares how you label a band if they’re making amazing music?!

jawbreaker is aweosme.
good taste.

but seaweed is very grunge i think.
but then again sdre was grunge in some ways. but just by being signed to sub pop in the 90’s it makes bands look grunge.

ALTON

idk if this is REALY emo…i believe that this is early emo band…but i also call emo FFTL with sonny, i call Paramore and Sliverstein emo bands…cuz idk how to call it…
i like SDRA and other old emo and screamo bands like Mineral or Raein
but i also love that todays ‘emo’ bands and idc if i call them ‘emo bands’ wrong

so..if i say i listen to AWESOME ROCK MUSIC…i am not a liar
F*CK the genres, love the MUSIC x)

If you like SDRE, you’ll probably like: Moss Icon, Galleon’s Lap, Rites of Spring, Fugazi, Embrace, Quicksand, Glassjaw, Jawbreaker, Sensefield, Texas Is The Reason, Seaweed, (old) Jimmy Eat World, Built To Spill, Elliott, Jejune, The Get Up Kids, The Promise Ring, Mineral, The Gloria Record…

people always want to put a label on everything. SDRE were great because no one could really pinpoint their sound. That’s what makes a band great, when you can’t even put a label on it.

ALLAN

I always tell people that Sunny Day Real Estate is the only “emo” band I like.

I’m actually not aware of any other pre-95 emo… anyone care to share?

?? drawing lines again, what’s the point? does it satisfy you that this awesome band’s music is called ‘emo’ or ‘indie’? when you’re done putting them into a box please remember to wrap it up with a ribbon. cheh.

Yes the are…They are one of the forefathers of the genre. Emo in the 90’s was deeply angst-wridden and artsy. Todays variant of Emo is known as “Emo-pop” becuase major labels took the astethic out of the genre and replaced the adult brood with adolencent nonsense.

Great song, great performance, though the singers face looks shitty when he sings loudly.

Sunny Day is what I had always thought of as emo - a more existential, urgent angst than today’s crying-about-girls version of emo. But while I will continue to argue that this is what should be meant by emo and that a word’s meaning shouldn’t change just because it’s the fashion of people without perspective, it doesn’t really matter. In the end, this is just great fucking music.
